Requirements

Who can apply?

Anyone can apply! Dance Tours provide 'Open Access' Ballet classes for any student aged between 7 years and over.

Do I have to become a member to take classes? You must be a minimum of 7 years of age by the 1st September in the year you wish to attend our ‘Dance Only’ workshop to apply. There is no upper age limit as long as you have reasonable fitness and are able to dance and train alongside your peers. You must be a minimum of 9 years of age to attend our Dance & Tourism course. It is required that any student under 10 years of age is escorted by a responsible adult for the entire of the course.

No, you do not need to have passed any exams to take part in a Dance Tours workshop. Dance Tours has its own levels based on age and not syllabus. No, these classes are not geared towards an examination syllabus! It is freestyle master class.

As we do not hold auditions for our workshops our classes and associated age groups are to be used as a guide only. Dance Tours recognises the fact that a students ability may not always be consistent with the age groups set out in its programme. Considering this, Our teachers take care to monitor the level of each student in the first class and will re-allocate them to a different level if required.

Do I need to be fit to start with?

No, people of any fitness, age, or shape are welcome - but please do indicate if you have an injury or physical problem before taking class. Taking ballet class is a good way to start getting fit. Ballet is especially good for flexibility, posture and balance. A moderate level of fitness is recommended to take class with Dance Tours.

How long will it take me to learn how to do ballet?

If you do other exercise such as yoga, pilates or gym work it is likely that you will be able to pick up the exercises and the ballet technique really quickly - certainly within the first two to four weeks. Progress normally depends on how well you pick up new information, and especially how much you practice in between classes. The more you practise, and the more you listen to the music, the closer you are to becoming a better dancer.

Do I need any previous experience of doing ballet?

No, we hold ballet classes for absolute beginners. If you would like private coaching either in the studio or online please let us know.

Will i cope in the class?

Dance Tours Workshops are available to dancers of all ages. Our classes are divided into separate age groups and are designed to challenge the creative, technical and artistic capabilities of each group in a nurturing and professional environment.

The Dance Tours workshop is tailored to try to help each individual student meet their goals, giving unique care and due consideration to each students age, standard and style of dance. Each student will receive the same level of individual care and instruction from our guest teachers throughout the program.

What standard do I need to be ?

It is recommended that students attend at least two ballet these classes a week at their local ballet school and already have a good grasp of positions and terminology. For Pre-School and Primary classes, no ballet experience is required.

Are there any classes for boys only?

Yes. We recognise the importance of ballet classes tailored to young male students. Taught by professional dancers, these classes focus on building strength and flexibility, and offer a fun and friendly environment for learning. The boy’s classes are available for 9yrs years of age and over.

What Is a male Dance Belt? A dance belt is a thong-like undergarment generally worn by male ballet dancers to support and protect the genitalia, as many advanced ballet moves could possibly produce pain or injury to the groin area. A dance belt is also used for visual considerations.

Why do dancers wear tights? Tights are typically worn by both male and female ballet dancers Tights accentuate the overall shape of the legs, and keep the muscles warm to prevent injury. Tights also allow ballet instructors to correct improper technique, as baggy clothing such as sweat pants would "hide" mistakes and misalignment.

In some cases dancers may be on pointe every day in very humid weather. Therefore, we suggest that each dancer brings approximately one pair of shoes per week. In addition, dancers may wish to bring an additional pair of shoes for final rehearsals and performances. Dancers are encouraged to take care of their shoes and use hardeners when necessary to lengthen the life of their pointe shoes.

May my child have a cell phone during the workshop? Yes. However, during class, cell phones must be turned off.

General Questions

How long does it take to become a professional dancer?

raining to become a professional dancer normally takes between 8-12 years. Most students begin at about age 4. Beginning ballet usually consists of 1-2 ballet technique classes a week. As the student gets older, around 14, they are heavily involved in about 10-15 classes a week made up of ballet technique, pointe (for women), jazz, modern, partnering, and more. Students wanting a career in dance would normally take the next step to attend an international recognised professional ballet school which offers a nationally accredited program of classes for 1 to 3 years that prepare students between the ages of 15-19 for a future in dance. After this students should then be ready to audition for a company of their choice.

When should I start taking ballet and dance?

The answer to that depends on how old you are. Most Children normally start at 4 years of age when their bones and body are strong. Some dancers who start in their teens are still able to dance professionally. If you are older and looking forward to ballet as a recreation then the sooner you start, the better.

Girls must not go up on pointe until the bones of their feet are fully developed and the muscles--not only in the arches and legs, but also the lower torso--are strong enough to bear the stress. Individuals vary around 12 years of age however In some cases, it may be wise to get a physician's opinion as well as your teacher. Once a dancer is ready, preparation for pointe work is a slow and gradual process with exercises starting on the barre.

Can Dance Tours recommend a ballet school?

It is Dance Tours policy to not recommend any one particular ballet school. Although we can suggest where to look for schools in your area.

What are the benefits of dance training?

Studies have shown that training in any of the classical art forms supports higher levels of discipline and expression in children. A skilled dancer develops increased levels of physical awareness, maintains higher standards for themselves and has incredible drive towards success. We focus on building confidence and strong self-esteem in our dancers as they progress through their training, as well as individuality and expression. Performance opportunities help develop comfort in front of an audience.

In the event the start of your class is delayed due to technical difficulties beyond Dance Tours control. In most circumstances the teacher will either run over time or do their best to make up the time during class.

What should I expect from my teacher demonstrating online?

Teaching classical ballet is a physical activity and appropriate physical demonstration between students and teachers in the virtual classroom setting is essential to ballet training to illustrate an exercise or concept to a student or to correct a student’s body.

Ballet posture may often require that teachers highlight their rib-cage, buttock and inner thigh by moving or touch their body parts to demonstrate positions and movements to the students. This often involves a good deal of exposure to the camera.

Dance Tours recognises that such physical demonstration is a potentially complex area; and it also fully recognises its responsibilities for safeguarding students and teachers and for protecting their welfare.

Performance customers

How do we book tickets for 'A Night of Royal Elegance' ?

Performance customers looking to purchase tickets should go to our ‘What’s On’ page. Click on the link to the event you are interest in and you will be re-directed to the appropriate place to choose tickets and purchase them.

Carefully read all the information about the event (including Dance Tours’ Terms & Conditions and Payment Policies) before making your purchase.

Group bookings for 'A Night of Royal Elegance'

How do we book for groups?

All group bookings for 'A Night of Royal Elegance' must be made directly through Dance Tours' group bookings consultant. You can do this in two ways, either by filling out our online groups' form or by emailing us.

Can we select our desired seats?

Yes, you can choose any seat available. Dance Tours will help you locate the best seats for your group.

As a group, do we have to purchase the tickets for the same day?

You do not have to pay for these tickets immediately on booking. Once you have made the booking, you are given 1 week to pay for your tickets. (In special circumstances & for large groups, additional time may be requested).

In a group, some people would like to see the performance multiple times. Would this count as a group booking?

A group booking is 10 persons at the performance on the same day. A booking with less than 10 persons on the same day would not qualify as a group booking. You would also not receive the same discount privileges as a group does, nor would they have the option to book the Pre-show talk.

Do we have to purchase the same category tickets? eg. Some people prefer S ticket, others prefer A ticket? booking?

The group leader making the purchase has the option to choose S or A class tickets. However, discounts do not apply to A class tickets. So, it is better value to purchase the S class tickets, because of the discount you receive on each S class ticket.

Are the Back Stage Tour and Talk Show group-booking included as a special free gift? Or do you charge for it, if so how much? booking?

The Pre-show talk is an exclusive offer only available to groups, and can only be booked if you have 10 persons or more going to the show on one performance. If you book this offer, your group will be given VIP treatment to enter the backstage area to meet the dancers and listen to them talk about the show. This is a perfect way for your group to learn about the pieces being performed by the dancers before you watch the show. The cost of the Pre-show talk is Y1,500 per person. You can choose this option at the time of your booking.
If your group is visiting the show more than once and want to book again, we can arrange for a different dancer to talk each time. Pre-Show talks are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
