Aim

The Aim of Dance Tours is to:
  • Promote dance to the masses as an art form.
  • Promote dance to the masses as a way to keep healthy and fit.
  • Promote dance as a vehicle for experiencing international cultural tourism.
  • Promote self-discipline and good behaviour as the norm.
  • Encourage students without discrimination to learn.
  • To develop as a person,
  • Make progress,
  • Work hard,
  • Think for themselves,
  • To support each other and to co-operate with both staff and their peers.

Responsibilities
We expect students to take responsibility for themselves, work hard, avoid aggressive or bullying behaviour, put their point of view sensibly, accept Dance Tours rules and the constructive criticism or correction of it’s Teachers and Staff, learn to deal with things when they go wrong, work in partnership with teachers and other staff to develop their own abilities and ideas and to think and work creatively.

Members of staff
All members of staff are expected to promote good behaviour and respect for others. In part they will do this by themselves adhering to high standards of practice in their dealings with students, other members of staff, parents, Directors and others visiting or in contact with Dance Tours. Well-planned and suitably challenging lessons make a major contribution to good discipline, as does applying all rewards and sanctions fairly and consistently. All members of staff have the power to report or discipline students whose behaviour is unacceptable, who break Dance Tours rules or who fail to follow a reasonable instruction. All members of staff are expected to promote self-discipline amongst students and to deal appropriately with any unacceptable behaviour.

To a large extent, good behaviour in a studio depends on the teacher. Students will behave better if they feel that they have clear tasks which they are capable of achieving, and if they can take some responsibility for their own learning. Good discipline is greatly assisted by good organisation.

    Few problems arise when teachers:
  • Are on time and lessons are properly prepared
  • Clearly know what they are doing and how they intend to do it
  • Are confident of their own knowledge and understanding
  • Set high standards
  • Set work which is appropriate to the students’ abilities
  • Set work regularly
  • Give clear instructions about when work is to be done and handed in
  • Ensure that materials needed for the lesson are ready and easily available
  • Keep external interruptions to a minimum
  • Give students regular feedback on their progress.

Director
The Directors are responsible for setting the general principles that inform Dance Tours behaviour policy.

The Director’s role is to decide and promote the standard of behaviour acceptable to Dance Tours taking account these principles, and to ensure that standards are maintained consistently throughout. The Managers and Teachers have the day- to-day responsibility for promoting good behaviour and maintaining discipline during the workshop, which will include establishing rewards and sanctions. The Director will provide guidance to members of staff on managing and improving students’ behaviour consistently and fairly, and support members of staff in disciplining students.

Allegations against teachers and other members of staff will be dealt with quickly, fairly and consistently in a way that protects the student and supports the person against whom the allegation is made. Every effort will be made to maintain confidentiality and guard against unwanted publicity while an allegation is being investigated. Suspension will not used as an automatic response when an allegation has been reported.

Policy of Supervision

The purpose of this policy is to offer guidance to all staff about the appropriate supervision of all students throughout the Workshop.

Staff have a duty of care to the students, which is based on the principle of loco parentis (Latin for "in the place of a parent"). This can be thought of the standard of care expected of prudent parents in the care of their children.

    In order for staff to carry out their duties effectively they must be given the resources to;
  • Express in systematic terms or as a formula the overall aims and objectives of Dance Tours for their implementation.
  • Carry out their professional duties effectively.
  • Ensure the maintenance of good order and discipline at all times when students are present on Dance Tours premises or elsewhere and whenever the students are engaged in authorised Dance Tours activities whether on Dance Tours premises or elsewhere.
  • Make arrangements for the security and effective supervision of the Dance Tours hired venues and it’s contents.

Negligence
If a claim for negligence is brought against a member of staff it is important to be able to show that a structured supervision plan exists, is known and understood by all involved, and that adequate care was being exercised at the time of the incident. High standards of supervision must be maintained at all times.

Any injury to a student would not in itself be grounds for a successful action against a member of staff. It is necessary to show that there has been negligence by Dance Tours that has resulted in the injury sustained by the students. The employer is responsible for any negligent acts of their employees committed in the course of their employment. However if anything happened to a student, the cause of which could be attributed to some lapse in the standard of appropriate care, the member of staff could incur some legal liability.

Employees conveying students in private cars or minibuses;
It is recommended that, where possible, students should be transported in a coach, minibus or by public transport and that the use of private cars should be discouraged. More than one students or an accompanying adult must be in the vehicle. No student is allowed to be alone in a car with less than two adults at any given time.

Before allowing a member of staff to drive a minibus or to use his/her own car to transport students, the VC should check as appropriate that the member of staff:

  • Has a satisfactory driving licence (employees must bring any endorsements to the attention of the Director).
  • Has fully comprehensive insurance which covers use for the purposes of his/her employer's business.

Only those school employees who have attended and passed a formal minibus driving course and test should be allowed to drive minibuses or similar. Whenever employees are driving the risk assessment relevant to the trip must also address the problem of driver fatigue.

DRIVING
This policy sets out the arrangements for compliance with legislation relating to driver safety and outlines the responsibilities for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of drivers and passengers.

Responsibilities
It is the responsibility of all managers to ensure that risk assessments are carried out for all driving activities and that suitable control measures are implemented to eliminate or reduce the risks as low as reasonably practicable.

It is the responsibility of all staff that drives as part of their job and their line managers to ensure that these guidelines and policies are followed.

    Risk Assessment
All managers responsible for those who drive as part of their role should assess the risks associated with driving and should consider measures to:

  • Eliminate or reduce road travel (using alternative means of transport, telephone meetings, etc.);
  • Prevent driver tiredness (planning journeys in advance to include appropriate rest breaks, raising staff awareness of what to do if they are tired, etc.)
  • Promote safer driving (vehicle checks, incident reporting, etc.)
  • Identify safer routes (avoiding peak periods and high risk areas)

Drivers should undertake personal risk assessment specific to the particular journey prior to starting out, and during the journey if any unexpected events occur (changes in weather conditions, etc.). Appropriate action should be taken as necessary. These assessments can be informal and do not need to be recorded.

Vehicle Suitability
All vehicles supplied to Dance Tours will be of a standard that is safe, reliable and fit for use. Drivers of all vehicles must ensure that they undertake regular (at least weekly) vehicle checks. Services and MOTs must be arranged as required to ensure that the vehicle remains roadworthy at all times.

Drivers who use their own vehicle at work should ensure that it is maintained in a safe, roadworthy and reliable condition at all times and arrange services, MOTs as required.

Driver Suitability
All drivers must hold a valid driving licence for the category of vehicle they are required to drive. Drivers who passed their test after 1 January 1997 are only permitted to drive a certain category of vehicle. Managers should check the licences of staff who are required to drive as part of their duties on appointment and annually thereafter.

Individual drivers who are aware of not being fit or competent to drive must notify their manager immediately. This includes the loss of a driving licence, worsening of a notifiable medical condition or short-term concerns such as being under the influence of drugs/alcohol, tiredness or illness.

Driver Training
All drivers should be made aware during their induction of their responsibilities when driving at work. Driver training needs should be considered by the line manager and training arranged as appropriate.

Policy on Allegations about a member of the Staff.

Any allegation of abuse made against a teacher or other member of staff, volunteer or co-ordinator, must be referred to the Director who will take up the matter. If an allegation is made about the Director, the Assistant Director must be informed.

What happens next?
Once an allegation or disclosure is received it will be treated seriously and will be taken up by the Director or the Assistant Director within 24 hours:

    Principles
All allegations about members of staff will be dealt with according to the following principles:
  • Best Performance 2012 - Theatre critic Mr. Bin Umino (On*Stage Newspaper)
  • Put a risk assessment in place - Assess any urgent medical needs of the student and consider whether the student has suffered, or is likely to suffer significant harm.
  • Safeguarding the student is paramount, but Dance Tours also has a duty of care towards its employees. The process should be well managed and carried out in a way that provides effective protection for the student and at the same time supports the person who is the subject of the allegation.
  • Take any allegations to the Director of Dance Tours (or, if the allegation concerns the Director, then the allegations should be taken to the Assistant Director.
  • The Director, the Assistant Director will consider whether the matter should be discussed with the child’s parents, guardian or carers.

  • The Director, the Assistant Director
  • If there is an allegation against a member of staff, consider temporary suspension or changes to the schedule or accommodation.
  • If there is cause to suspect that a student is at risk of significant harm or if the matter has been or needs to be referred to the police.
  • Keep the person who is the subject of the allegation informed of the nature of the allegations and the progress of the case and consider what support is appropriate for the individual, including union representation or counselling.
  • Establish a named contact for the student, parents, outside agencies and the person against whom the allegations are made, and inform them of the contact’s name and contact details.

Investigations should be fair, thorough, consistent and quick, and the response should be proportionate. The process should be transparent but confidential. The person about whom the allegation has been made should be told about the allegations and the progress of the case, and given a full opportunity to answer the allegation and make representation about it. Resignation and compromise agreements must not prevent an allegation being followed up.

Every effort should be made to maintain confidentiality and guard against unwanted publicity whilst an allegation is being considered or investigated.

Timescales
It is expected that 80 per cent of cases should be resolved within one month, 90 per cent within three months, and all but the most exceptional cases should be completed within 12 months. For those cases where it is clear immediately that the allegation is unfounded or malicious then it is expected that they should be resolved within one week. Where the initial consideration decides that the allegation does not involve a possible criminal offence it will be for the employer to deal with it, although if there are concerns about Child Protection, the employer should discuss with the correct authorities in this case. In such cases, if the nature of the allegation does not require formal disciplinary action, the Director should institute appropriate action within 3 working days. If a disciplinary hearing is required and can be held without further investigation, the hearing should be held within 15 working days.

Policy on Appropriate Physical Contact in Dance.

Contact
Teaching classical ballet is a physical activity and appropriate physical contact between students and teachers in class is essential to ballet training. Teachers will use their hands, and occasionally a foot or knee, to illustrate a concept to a student or to adjust parts of a student’s body (especially with the younger students). Ballet posture often requires adjusting the rib-cage and the buttock area simultaneously and it is sometimes necessary to touch the inner thigh, especially with younger students. In pas de deux classes, teachers will be demonstrating with students in ways which will involve supporting and lifting. In choreographic teaching, teachers demonstrate positions and movements to the students by moving parts of the students’ bodies and by moving dancers in relation to each other: this often involves a good deal of contact with students.

Dance Tours recognises that such physical contact is a potentially complex area; and it also fully recognises its responsibilities for safeguarding students and teachers and for protecting their welfare.

The following principles and procedures are in place to fulfil Dance Tours obligations:
  • Contact by the teacher is made with particular awareness of the needs of each individual, to assist the young dancer in correcting placement.
  • All teachers will treat any physical contact with due sensitivity and care
  • Contact will not involve force or the use of any instrument
  • Teachers will be mindful of location and avoid situations where they are isolated with a student; all classes should be held in studios and dance areas
  • Teachers and students should feel free to report any concerns to the Director, Assistant Director or an appropriate member of staff.

Policy on the Prevention of bullying

The ultimate aim of Dance Tours anti-bullying policy is to:
  • prevent bullying of any sort
  • make it clear to all students and staff that bullying is always unacceptable
  • ensure that everyone can operate in a supportive, caring and safe environment without fear of being bullied.

The seriousness of bullying cannot be emphasised enough. Bullying is among the top concerns that parents have about their children’s safety. Bullying is also a top concern of children and young people themselves.

Definition:
Bullying can take many forms (for instance, cyber- bullying via text messages or the internet), and is often motivated by prejudice against particular groups, for example on grounds of race, religion, culture, sex, gender, sexual orientation, homophobia, special educational needs or disabilities, appearance or health conditions, home conditions. All members of Dance Tours, should have an understanding of what bullying is and be familiar with the Dance Tours policy on bullying; and all have a responsibility to help create an atmosphere in which students and staff can report any incident of bullying knowing that these reports will always be taken seriously.

Examples of unacceptable behaviour include:
Physical (including sexual) assault, for example, hitting, kicking, spitting, removing belongings, damaging property Verbal abuse, by name-calling, teasing, ‘banter’, insulting, writing notes or making offensive remarks.

Cyber-bullying, which is defined as the use of ICT by an individual or group to support deliberate, repeated and hostile behaviour intended to harm others. Examples include using social websites (such as Facebook or Twitter), mobile ‘phones, text messaging, photographs, video and e-mail Indirect emotional tormenting by excluding from social groups or spreading malicious rumours Initiation ceremonies intended to cause pain, anxiety or humiliation.

What to do
The best way to stamp out bullying is for people to be aware of the issues involved, to be involved in prevention and to be clear in their own minds what action to take should cases arise.

If a student witnesses bullying behaviour they should support the victim by offering friendship and making it clear that in their opinion what is happening to them is wrong. They should encourage them to speak out on their own behalf by confronting the bully, or with their permission, confront the bully themselves. They should accompany the victim to a trusted adult, or suggest that they see their teacher or a member of staff on their behalf.

If a member of Staff witnesses an incident of bullying or it is reported to them they must reassure and support the students involved; advise them that you are required to pass details on to the Director or Assistant Director; and ask them to write down their allegation. The same procedures must be followed as for a Child Protection case; the member of staff must:

Choose a place to talk where the talk will not be interrupted but also where the member of staff is safe from allegation.

Listen carefully and patiently to the student, no matter how difficult the member of staff finds what they are saying.

Show the student they believe in him/her and takes his/her disclosure seriously. Stay calm and reassuring, and maintains neutral body language.

Not promise to keep the conversation secret, no matter how insistent the student may be. The staff member must explain that they are ready to listen but that when they have heard the account there may be parts that they have to tell somebody else in order to get the help required.

Not press for information, cross-examine or lead the student, as well-intentioned questions could prejudice further investigations. It is particularly important not to use leading questions or to put words into the student’s mouth. If the member of staff needs to respond verbally, they should feed back to the student what they have said.

Ensure the students’ immediate safety. Make careful notes immediately after the conversation, giving an accurate and full account of what was said. These notes should include all relevant information regarding the setting and circumstances of the communication, including the time and the persons present.

Inform the Director or Assistant Director immediately of the disclosure, allegations or suspicion, give them a copy of the written notes and ensure that they are aware of any immediate medical needs. They will co- ordinate an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the complaint.

Take no further action, including discussing their suspicions with the parent or anyone else involved in the care of the child, until the decision has been taken how to proceed.

Once the director is clear that a bullying offence has been committed, the bully and any others involved will be interviewed individually and written notes will be kept of the accounts of events. The process for dealing with bullying will be explained clearly to them. If the complaint regards a group, every effort will be made to prevent collusion during the investigation.

The Director decides whether to involve parents in the next stages.

It is the School’s intention to try, in the first case, to resolve such issues by getting all the parties together, to discuss the events and their causes and to seek reconciliation.

Details of the incident will be recorded on all the students’ files. It is the policy of Dance Tours to attempt to resolve such issues internally using our own disciplinary sanctions, unless the matter is of such gravity that it needs be reported.
